Research and development of new atmospheric plasma systems for surface treatments aimed at improving metal/polymer adhesion in innovative manufacturing processes.

The JoinPlasm project is a research and development project aimed at both product and process innovation for use in the advanced manufacturing systems and smart manufacturing sectors. The project involves the study of plasma-assisted surface treatments for improving metal/polymer adhesion in over-injection processes.

In addition to the use of the current atmospheric plasma technology, developed and commercialized by partner NADIR, for plasma-phase deposition of a particular film-thin, nanometer-sized film called “primer-like coating,” the project saw the development of a new particular type of plasma source characterized by a cylindrical geometry, capable of carrying out the surface modification process coaxially with respect to the materials of interest, and thus more suitable for the treatment of longilinear and tubular materials such as those of interest to partner VBN.

The development of the new atmospheric plasma source, is supported by the studies performed by the UNIPD partner, which is in charge of the basic study of the system to be developed: from the simulation and modeling of simplified prototypes to their experimental verification.

Finally, thanks to the intervention of partner PROTECH, a company specializing in electronic design, hardware development, and software development, the plasma generation and control system will be upgraded and equipped with communication interfaces in order to make the new machine-process system remotely controllable, embedded in IoT systems, and meeting the requirements characteristic of Industry 4.0.
